MENTOR DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME FOR LDP ALUMNI OF AFRICA
This program aims in creating mentors in the community for the betterment of the community at large.
AFED CBG Facilitators with the support of development facilitators, conducted the workshop based on Egan’s Skilled Helper Model which has been updated and refined over 35 years. The model is positive and systematic and applicable across cultures for a variety of helping situations, emphasizing on change and leading to values outcome.
The goal of Egan’s model is to help clients help problems more effectively and develop under-used or unused resources as opportunities more fully. It also serves to help clients become better and helping themselves and it also helps clients to develop ancient-oriented prevention mentality.
The mentors will practice the skills acquired and will go through a process of evaluation after which they will serve in various jamaats.
DAR ES SALAAM – MARCH 2017
AFED-CBG Facilitators, Br. Shabbirhussein Khalfan and Sr. Shama Dewji, conducted the workshop with the support of development facilitators: Br. Minhas Tejani, Sis. Tahera Shivji and Sis. Zahra Bandali Jacksi. A total of 14 Alumni from Arusha, Dar es Salaam, Mombasa, Nairobi and Reunion Island participated in Dar es Salaam which was held on 11th and 12th March 2017.

MOMBASA – APRIL 2017
The same program was conducted in Mombasa by AFED – CBG Facilitators Br. Shabbir Khalfan and Sis. Shama Dewji from 7th to 9th April 2017. They were supported by the following Development Facilitators: Sis. Mumtaz Ladak, Br. Inayat Abbas Firdousi, Br. Nishathusein Karim and Sis. Neelam Jiwa.
A total of 15 Alumni from Mombasa and Nairobi participated.
Comments from Participants and Development Facilitator/s:
- The facilitation was done very well and the facilitators were very encouraging. It was very creative and learner centred.
- The facilitators were very supportive. Did not rush through. If there was any area or questioning, they took us through it and they always kept asking if we had any questions. The role plays were also great learning for me.
- What I liked the most was, being able to practice with different people so the learning was enriching.
- What I liked the most was, the mind mapping technique was very new for me and I have loved it because it makes the whole process less cumbersome.
- My key learning was – the mantra “the mind that has the question has the answer” – A mentor helps you discover the hope in yourself”
- I have always believed that the skills acquired in MDP are transferable to different settings and environments. For example, I can conveniently use brainstorming technique in a Madrasah classroom to generate ideas and thoughts on any subject. I can easily use force fields in assisting anyone who needs clarity and reassurance in decision making – DF
- My experience at MDP was wonderful for the following reasons:
- It was a realistic do-able method.
- The course highlighted important areas of self-growth within the topic of mentoring.
- I thought the extra support on each table was an advantage and very helpful.
