Mtongwe residents in Mombasa County lack access to clean and
safe drinking water. More than 6000 people in the area depend on often unsafe
water from boreholes for domestic use. They pay Shs. 40-70/- per 20 litres.
In an attempt to empower the local communities residing in remote areas and
promoting Centre sustainability by introducing economically viable projects,
Bilal Muslim Mission of Kenya in partnership with Boreal Light GmbH from
Germany and the support of the Irene und Friedrich Vorwerk Stiftung
(Foundation) launched its 4th water desalination plant at the Al-Ridha Islamic
Centre in Mtongwe.
Things you may know:
The Water desalination plant has been installed in 4 regions in a span of one year:
- Miamba, Kwale County on 02nd December 2018
- Pate, Lamu on 02nd February 2019
- Burani, Kwale County on 24th August 2019
- Mtongwe, Mombasa County on 07th December 2019
The inauguration took place on 7th December 2019 alongside Maulid celebrations for the birth anniversary of Prophet Mohammad {s.a.w.w} which was hosted by Al-Ridha Islamic Centre of Mtongwe.
The water desalination plant can produce up to 20,000 litres of hygienic drinking water per day for the residents of Mtongwe. A jerrican of 20litres will be sold at a minimal cost of Kshs.20 so as to encourage residents of the area to consume the healthy and hygienic water.
Alongside the water desalination, a solar powered electric cargo bike provided by Siemens of Germany was also launched. It will be used for delivering water. The bicycle’s unique feature is that it has a rechargeable solar battery and transports 200 litres of water for a distance of up to 70 km.
The water project will additionally create employment for local youth in delivering water to homes in the area using handcarts. This is a common practice in the area for water delivery service. Bilal Muslim Mission of Kenya expresses its appreciation to the Friedrich Vorwerk Stiftung, Dr Hamed Beheshti of Boreal Light GmbH and WaterWorks Ltd, Siemens Stiftung, Lady Fatema Trust of UK, other Donors and well-wishers involved in supporting these projects.
