CAREER ROUND TABLE – A WEBINAR
One of the main focus areas of the AF Education Board for the term 2019 -2022 is to support individual students within the community with effective career counseling mechanisms. This has become even more important as students and parents combat uncertain times. AF Education board thus organized a webinar titled “Career Roundtable” on the 20th of June 2020 which was broadcasted LIVE on the Africa Federation YouTube Channel.
The webinar aimed to reach out to youths who are in the process of career selection and their parents. A set of esteemed panelists who are experts in the field of career guidance – Sister Zeenat Thawer, Sister Sajida Master, Brother Ali Asgher Sheriff and Brother Hassan Dewji – touched on different aspects of career and brought on the table their vast experience.
The conversation moderated by Brother Farhan Yusuf covered topics including steps students can take towards choosing their career path, roles parents and educationists/ schools play and job market changes owing to COVID – 19.
Some snippets from the panelists…
“A career is what we make of our lives – not just a living”
“A career counsellor will not tell you WHAT career to go for…”
“A career is a journey through learning and work”
“As parents, we may not be able to teach technical skills, but we can help our children work on what we call life skills or values – these are highly valued”
“A career choice is driven by many factors – your grades, your interests, your goals and your objectives. Market demands are also an important consideration”
“A career education and guidance program should have a structure. Gatsby benchmark is a structure commonly used in UK”
The webinar was well viewed on the Africa Federation YouTube and Facebook channels with significant positive feedback through emails. Some of the feedback include:
“Roundtable conference is an excellent program”
“Interesting to hear experts talking about the current challenges and career paths”
“Masha Allah. Good panelists. Thank you for all your efforts. Hope such programs will be in continuation”.
AF Education Board would like to thank all the 4 esteemed panelists and the moderator for the very informative and fruitful session. Their expertise in the area of career counselling allowed youths, parents, and educationists to draw a road map for their career paths.
Moreover, we thank the volunteers for tireless efforts and support in ensuring the success of the program.
