Progress Report – Zahra Residency – Housing Project in Antananarivo, Madagascar
The Zahra Residency – A Rent-To-Own housing project in Antananarivo, Madagascar consists of 5 storeys building with 30 apartments in total, out of which 10 units are 3-bedroom apartments and 20 units are 2-bedroom apartments, and has a parking lot for each apartment. The project is supported by Africa Federation, the World Federation and Conseil Regional of Madagascar (CROI) with a soft loan arrangement to be repaid within the period agreed upon with CROI and KSI Jamaat of Antananarivo.
The Scheme for this project is as follows:
- KSI Jamaat of Antananarivo has purchased 5 flats as legacy (heritage) which it will rent out.
- 25 Flats will be available on the Rent-to-Own scheme only for purchase by first time buyers.
The ground breaking of this unique project, first of its kind in Madagascar was initiated in the presence of the Chairman of CROI, Sheikh Haniphe Akbaraly, the Vice Chairman of CROI, Alhaj Feride Ismail, President of Antananarivo Jamaat, Alhaj Arzou Raza Alibay, AFED Nominated Councillor Alhaj Navazali Molou, Construction Committee Members and several other officials from CROI and Antananarivo KSI Jamaat.
The construction commenced in August 2018, several site visits were made by the AFED Housing Development Board Chairman, Alhaj Akil Hirji, the AFED Chairman Shabir bhai Najafi and office bearers during their visits to Madagascar.
This project was conceived by joint efforts of the four institutions for the purpose to provide good accommodation to our community members in Antananarivo at a reasonable price on a scheme which is equitable and beneficial also in the future for the members to own a property in a prime location in Antananarivo.
The contract for the construction was awarded to a French Construction Company COLAS and Alhamdulillah, the structure work is completed and the finishing works in each floor such as plaster, screed, ceiling, tiling and electrical are continuing at a good pace. The the project is expected to be completed by December 2020.

The Housing Development Board Chairman Akil bhai Hirji appreciates the efforts and commitment by the construction committee members who are; Sheikh Haniphe Akbaraly, Alhaj Ferid Ismael, Alhaj Navazaly Molou, Alhaj Goulam Karim, Alhaj Irfane Badouraly, Alhaj Ashfak Vallimamod, Alhaj Arzou Raza Alibay and Alhaj Akif Alimamod; all have been working with great zeal and also putting a lot of efforts to ensure the smooth construction of the project, standards of quality and good workmanship are maintained by the Contractor.
