AFTAB Holds a Virtual Session
on
‘The Big Question’
Staying with your in-laws; an Islamic Obligation or a Cultural Practice
The Africa Federation Tabligh Board (Aftab) – Family Affairs team hosted a program held on a Virtual platform called “The Big Question: Staying with your in laws, an Islamic obligation or a Cultural practice”. The three speakers were; Sheikh Nuru Mohamed, Abbas Merali and Shaheen Merali from United Kingdom. The program was moderated by Mohammedjawaad Fazal Kassam (MJ) on 1st August 2020.
This topic was chosen after considering the fact that humans are social beings and when they work together, they can achieve a lot of things and huge milestones like the procedure of open-heart surgery and going to the moon. All these milestones in human history came about because people worked together. But on the other hand, humans have desires, needs and just like two plates if kept together will collide, the humans also will collide (i.e. collision between rights, interests, desires, and needs) however conflicts will arise between the rights and interests of human beings with each other, resulting sometimes in aggression and even war. Marriage is the foundation of the family and the family is the foundation of a society. If we strengthen the marriage, we strengthen the family which strengthen the society.
It is a worldwide observation that many marriages end up in a divorce due to the interference from the in-laws whilst some marriages thrive due to the support given by the in-laws. The program was put up with the intention of creating awareness about the rights and responsibilities of the couples as well as the rights and responsibilities of the in-laws in nurturing a marriage is concerned.
The speakers with their wealth of experiences highlighted beautifully the rights and limitations of the couples and the in laws, and they also gave tips on how to deal with sensitive issues at home. They emphasized on the emotional maturity and emotional intelligence which is required to strike a balance in order to nurture the marriage. Under the guiding questions by the host the speakers highlighted the importance of Akhlaq and how to balance between the rights and Akhlaq.
This was a stepping stone for our next program which will be done Insha’Allah in the near future and the focus will be now on the couples and how they can be the two pillars in a successful marriage.
