Eid al-Ghadeer is observed on the 18th of Zilhajj to commemorate the appointment by the Holy Prophet (S) of Imam Ali (a.s) as his successor and leader of the Muslim Ummah. This year’s Eid al-Ghadeer was marked on 24th July 2022 at the Al-Ridha Islamic Complex in Mtongwe, Mombasa. This is a yearly event celebrated by Bilal Kenya across all its 15 centres.
A total of 300 people attended the event at Mtongwe. This included the local community, Sheikhs from Bilal and independent centres, Sunni Sheikhs and madaris. Some of the madaris that graced the event were Mahdy, Iman, Tauba, Zaharia, Ahlul bait, Al Huda and Iqra.
Below are some of the outdoor activities conducted:
- Tug of war – women from Likoni and Mtongwe.
- Dua for patients at the Coast general Hospital led by the maalims and students.
- Friendly football match and prize giving.
The event commenced at Al Ridha Multi-purpose hall with:
- Quran Recitation by Ust. Nassoro Salim.
- Poetry recitation by madrassa children.
- Speech from Sheikh Hassan Nzala.
- Speech from Sheikh Musa Shali.
- A word from the local administration
- Distribution of books on the message and event of Ghadeer.
In conclusion, the main messages from the event were the importance of having credible, principled and just leaders and preaching peace and tolerance amongst different sects.
