COMPLETION REPORT
Abaya is the most important outer garment for women of the Islamic community. The Abaya is a loosely fitted garment worn over clothes which ensures one is properly covered. Since maintaining hijab Modesty is mandatory for a Muslim lady, Abayas were invented and now a large number of Muslim girls and Women wear them. Unfortunately, families residing in our rural Centres cannot afford to purchase one and most girls put on local shawl also known as a ‘Lesso’ when attending madrasah classes which is inappropriate.
OUTREACH:
With the generous support provided by various donors, Bilal Muslim Mission of Kenya was able to distribute 818 Abaya to young girls of 12 years who attend madrassa in all 15 Bilal Kenya Centres. This project will:
- Aid in enhancing modesty among young girls by fulfilling Allah’s (SWT) command to cover themselves well.
- Reduce the burden from families for the cost of buying Abayas which costs between Kshs. 1500–2500 (US$12-22).
Stitching of the Abayas was done by local tailors in order to encourage them and support their small businesses. The first distribution commenced in October 2021 and has been completed in September 2022.
The young girls expressed their gratitude upon receiving Abayas.
The Bilal Muslim Mission of Kenya appreciates the generous support and assistance received from various donors to ensure a successful run of this project.
