
The Chairman of Africa Federation (AFED), Alhaj Amine Nassor is pleased to announce the appointment of Alhaj Murtaza Bhai Somji of Nairobi as Chairman of the Economic Development Board of Africa Federation for the new term, 2022-2025.
Murtaza bhai (pictured centre) has a long history of community service and an impeccable track record of development including the construction of the Musafirkhana and the recently completed Multipurpose Hall at the Jaffery Islamic Centre in Nairobi. These form part of a much broader spectrum of projects he has achieved or been actively involved in at community level.
Born and raised in Tanga, his fervent zeal for community development, growth mindset at both individual and institutional level alongside accolade-worthy social and voluntary services accorded to various institutions are a true testament of his individual influence and ability to lead an achieving team.
Serving at community level, his journey started as the Chairman of the Golden Crescent Group and a member of the AFED Education Board. He then developed to become the Assistant Secretary of SAAJ from where ascended to the position of the Chairman of SAAJ; and later on as the Hon. Trustee. Most recently he served as Chairman of the Nairobi Jaffery Education Board where he transformed the Academy into an exemplary institution of learning.
Professionally, Murtaza bhai is an Ophthalmic Optician & Speciality Contact Lens Practitioner, also serving as the Organizing Secretary of the Kenya Association of Opticians.
Murtaza bhai is also a recipient of the Haydari Medal that was awarded to him by SAAJ in August 2021. His encouraging and nurturing nature has seen the rise of many young leaders who he has groomed into a true reflection of his high achieving and diplomatic leadership style.
Murtaza Bhai’s track record in supporting members of the community towards economical upliftment through various growth funds and non-interest based loan-pools reflecting his uniquely empathetic approach to community development.

Mirjaen Ackberaly – Arusha – Member EDB (Pictured Far Left)
Mir Bhai is a businessman & an entrepreneur with over two decades of experience in different fields of industry; such as farming, education, health and real estates. Currently running an education center and managing real estates.
He has been handling the fort of EDB over the last three years and is well versed with Loans4Life concept. Mir Bhai is passionate about uplifting and empowering Community entrepreneurs and an astute monitor of paperwork and financials, including repayments etc.
Salilabbas Sadak – Nairobi – Secretary EDB (Pictured Second from Left)
Having lived in Mombasa, Toronto, Dar es Salaam and currently Nairobi, his experience in community service is fuelled by a diverse career background in Business, Innovation, Banking and Media.
Most recently the Secretary of the Nairobi Jaffery Education Board for 4 years, his experience and fervent approach to community service continues to drive his zeal towards constantly improving and innovating the various services offered to members of the community and community owned institutions.
He has also served in Nairobi as the head of Economic Development where he introduced various programs and initiatives during the strenuous COVID-19 period with great success.
Mazahir Dewji – Dar es Salaam – Vice Chairman EDB (Pictured Third from Right)
Born and raised in Dar es Salaam – Tanzania and being part of one of the biggest Jamaat, Mazahir is keen to get involved with Community Affairs what he calls his “second home”. He is very passionate when it comes to Community Services and often tries to be among the first ones to offer any services required that he acquires.
Mazahir has been volunteering in many sections of the Dar es Salam Jamaat, from serving the Media Room for 9 years, to volunteering in different subsection such as Union Sports Club, Social Services committee, Mehfile Abbas, Development Society, Kabrastan etc.
At just the age of 22, he launched the Khoja360 application to the Dar es Salaam Jamaat, one of the largest in the Khoja world. Khoja360 is a project that helps connect community businesses around the globe starting from the Dar es Salaam Jamaat. The project was developed by Mazahir Dewji and was later on handed over fully to the Dar es Salam Jamaat following 2 years of its launch.
Kanize Sakina Ladha – Dar es Salaam – Member EDB (Pictured Second From Right)
Kaniz is a finance professional who is looking to utilize her skills and knowledge to add value to the community. In her current employment, she is responsible for providing financial advisory services to a national and international client portfolio. She is also responsible for training and developing a workforce of 200 across Eastern Africa.
Kaniz resides in Tanzania and completed her undergraduate studies in Malaysia. She pursued her post graduate diploma, ACCA and CPA in Tanzania. She is currently working on completing her CIA qualifications.
Mehtab Ladak – Mombasa – Member EDB (Pictured Far Right)
Mehtab is currently employed by a global accounting firm in Mombasa, Kenya. She works within a network of audit, tax and consulting experts with offices across the Eastern Africa region. She is proficient in financial advisory and Kenyan tax laws for both individual and corporate entities.
Mehtab completed her undergraduate degree in Accounting & Finance in a London based University and is currently studying towards her ACCA qualification.
She is keen on being a part of the AFED Economic Development team and empowering young individuals in our community in a manner allowing them to make long-term self-sustaining economic decisions and be independent.
The AFED Secretariat extends its heartiest congratulations to Murtaza bhai on his appointment and wishes him success in the accomplishment of the Board’s goals and objectives set out for the term 2022-2025.
