UNLOCKING ENTREPRENEURIAL POTENTIAL
DEVELOPING LEADERS IN ENTREPRENEURIAL TRAINING
In July 2024, Sheikh Hassan Rocky and Sheikh Khamis Chimvatsi of Bilal Muslim Mission of Kenya attended the International Labour Organization’s (ILO) Start and Improve Your Business (SIYB) Training of Trainers (ToT) in Dar es Salaam, organized by the AFED Economic Development Board. The intensive 10-day program equipped them with advanced tools and methodologies to train and mentor entrepreneurs effectively. The SIYB programme is renowned globally and uplifts communities by offering high-quality training that gives individuals the skills to start and sustain successful businesses.
This training is particularly relevant to Bilal Muslim Mission of Kenya’s Economic Upliftment Programme (EUP). While the EUP has been providing vital financial support through business loans, some entrepreneurs have faced challenges in realizing their business potential. In response, the recent SIYB training cycle conducted by Sheikhs Rocky and Chimvatsi from July 3rd to August 16th 2024 at Al-Mahdi Centre in Burani, aimed to bridge this gap by offering comprehensive training in three key phases—Generate Your Business Idea (GYBI), Start Your Business (SYB), and Improve Your Business (IYB).
GYBI – GENERATE YOUR BUSINESS IDEA
As part of the SIYB training cycle, participants were guided through the Generate Your Business Idea (GYBI) phase. This process involved a systematic approach to generating business ideas, with the trainers leading participants on how to analyze and identify the most viable and bankable concepts. By the end of the GYBI training, participants had gained the skills needed to refine their business ideas and focus on those with the highest potential.
Key Successes
Increased enthusiasm for entrepreneurship, with participants displaying strong motivation to pursue self-employment.
A noticeable shift in mindset, encouraging participants to explore opportunities beyond dependency, paving the way for greater independence.
Challenges
While some participants required additional guidance to fully align their ideas with market realities, follow-up plans have been implemented to provide ongoing support and mentorship.
SYB - START YOUR BUSINESS
In the Start Your Business (SYB) phase, participants were equipped with practical knowledge on transforming their business ideas into sustainable ventures. By the conclusion of the training, each participant had developed an actionable plan to launch their business, empowered with the tools necessary to ensure long-term success.
Key Successes
Participants developed detailed, promising business plans, showing both logic and creativity, with a strong sense of commitment to starting their businesses.
Many displayed an inspiring drive to move forward with their entrepreneurial journeys, eager to implement the strategies they had learned.
Challenges
For some participants, additional support will be beneficial as they build their confidence and readiness for the demands of running a business. Plans are in place to provide continued mentorship to help bridge these gaps and reinforce their entrepreneurial mindset.
IYB - IMPROVE YOUR BUSINESS
This module was conducted for women entrepreneurs under our Economic Upliftment Programme (EUP). These entrepreneurs, long-time beneficiaries of the EUP loan system, have been in business for years. The training was organized to enhance their skills in key business areas, particularly marketing strategies.
Successes and Challenges
The training boosted motivation among participants, with several requesting further sessions. However, some faced difficulties due to the technical nature of the content and their varied educational backgrounds. We are committed to providing additional support where needed.
IMPACT AND LONG-TERM PLAN
The SIYB training has highlighted the incredible potential of the youth who are now equipped with the skills and knowledge to launch successful businesses. Their energy and determination show that with continued guidance they are well-positioned to make a meaningful impact in their communities. Additionally, women entrepreneurs gained valuable exposure and advice on improving their business models. Plans are already underway to expand the program and reach even more aspiring entrepreneurs.
