Mentoring is more than a simple exchange of knowledge; it is an investment in growth, both personal and communal. Effective mentoring nurtures confidence, resilience, and fresh perspectives, forming the backbone of any thriving community. By fostering these qualities, the Africa Federation Capacity Building Board (CBG) continues to build strong foundations for positive change across the regions it serves.
On October 8th and 9th, 2024, a transformative Mentor Development Programme (MDP) session was held in Saint Denis, Reunion, attracting 16 dedicated participants committed to furthering their roles as mentors within their communities. The session was led by Shama bai Dewji, alongside with Sr. Soumeya Djaffar and Sr. Roumana K. Daya. Together, they created a supportive environment where participants could develop key mentorship skills through practical exercises and active engagement.
The MDP initiative emphasizes Egan’s Skilled Helper Model, a structured approach that empowers mentors to support their mentees through active listening, reflective problem-solving, and goal-setting. Participants engaged in hands-on practice and collaborative discussions, gaining insights into navigating diverse challenges, fostering resilience, and inspiring self-confidence. As mentors, they are now equipped to build relationships based on empathy and non-judgment, ensuring a safe space for mentees to grow, learn, and overcome obstacles.
By focusing on developing mentors within each Jamaat, the CBG envisions a community that thrives on shared knowledge and mutual support. This program fosters a ripple effect, creating a network of mentors who can address specific community challenges with personalized, compassionate guidance.
The MDP session in Reunion, enabled participants to explore both the theoretical and practical aspects of mentorship, blending instruction with real-world applications, a combination that will benefit the community for years to come.
In his address at the closing ceremony, The Africa Federation Chairman Alhaj Amine Nassor emphasized the Federation's steadfast commitment to fostering unity and progress within the community. He commended the pivotal role of the Capacity Building Board (CBG) in empowering individuals through initiatives such as the Leadership Development Program (LDP) in November 2023 and the current Mentor Development Program (MDP) in Reunion. He urged participants to apply their acquired knowledge to inspire and guide others as role models and mentors. Expressing confidence in the positive impact of these efforts, he noted that they would enable the community to overcome challenges, strengthen mutual understanding, and advance responsibly toward growth and success. He concluded by wishing participants well and encouraging them to continue leading the community’s journey toward progress.
The Chairman of UAKSIR Alhaj Raza Aly Asgaraly expressed heartfelt gratitude to the facilitators from the Africa Federation Capacity Building Board (CBG) for their unwavering dedication and commitment to the success of the Mentor Development Program (MDP). He highlighted the transformative impact of such initiatives, emphasizing their role in fostering community progress and personal growth. Concluding his address, he inspired participants with the powerful reminder, encouraging them never to hesitate in investing in themselves, describing it as the most effective tool for personal development and collective advancement.
As these newly trained mentors begin their journeys, the MDP has laid a strong foundation for a supportive network within various Jamaats, all committed to community welfare and sustainable growth. Their newfound skills will undoubtedly bring positive change, enabling them to uplift, inspire, and lead through service.
The AFED Capacity Building Board (CBG) wish to accord their utmost gratitude and appreciation to the Office Bearers of Africa Federation and Union Des Associations Khodjas Shia Isnashri De La Reunion (UAKSIR) for their unwavering support for the programs held in Reunion.
CBG is equally grateful to the Africa Federation Secretariat for their continuous support, guidance and cooperation which makes it possible for us to consistently hold such training sessions and programs.
Lastly, we extend our sincere appreciation to the participants who invested their time and commitment in this journey, embracing the responsibility to shape a brighter future for themselves and their communities.
