As part of the Pre-University Prep Course (Camp) organized by Africa Federation Tabligh Board (AFTAB), in collaboration with the Education Board (EB) and AFED Youth Network (AYN), the certified career guidance counselor Sajida Master, conducted interactive workshops with the objective to prepare high school students for their future careers and university life. The workshops, held separately for boys on Monday, 5th August, and girls on Wednesday, 7th August 2024, aimed to provide students with essential tools, insights, and hands-on activities to help them make informed decisions about their academic and career paths.
The sessions began with the RIASEC test, a widely used career interest inventory. This free online test helps students identify their strengths and interests across six different career fields: Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, and Conventional. The results provided a foundation for the students to explore career options that align with their interests and talents.
After the self-assessment, students engaged in a career research activity. This interactive activity allowed students to explore careers that matched their RIASEC profiles. The boys focused on researching traditional career paths, while the girls were challenged to find and explore unusual or lesser-known careers. This approach opened up new opportunities for them and also encouraged them to think creatively about their future possibilities.
The workshops also covered essential aspects of university life, including tips on time management, balancing academics with personal well-being, and getting involved on campus. Students learned how to research universities that fit their academic ambition and were introduced to various online resources for finding scholarships.
Key factors to consider when choosing a university, such as location, programs, and campus culture, were discussed. Students were also guided on how to search for scholarships that align with their profiles. Additionally, information was provided about the various facilities that the Africa Federation offers to students, including loans and grants for higher education. The Strong Interest Inventory, a comprehensive career assessment tool, is available free of charge to community students, which ensures that our students have access to the resources they need to make informed decisions about their future.
The students showed great enthusiasm during the activities, especially when it came to discovering new and unique career options. The girls, in particular, were intrigued by the challenge of finding unusual careers and brought forward some fascinating ideas during their presentations. This experience not only increased their knowledge but also fostered creativity and critical thinking.
The Career and University Life Workshops, organized as part of the Pre-University Prep course by AFTAB, were a resounding success. These Career Guidance and Workshops equip our students with the knowledge and skills they need to make informed decisions about their future. We are confident that these sessions have inspired them to explore their potentials and pursue their goals with renewed confidence.
The Education Board recognizes the importance of such preparatory courses in shaping the futures of our students. We are deeply grateful to Africa Federation and AFTAB for the opportunity to conduct these workshops and contribute to the growth and development of our youth.
