Empowering Madrasah Teachers: NPL Program Sparks Innovative Teaching in Mauritius

On the 5th and 6th of October, the Africa Federation’s Capacity Building Board (CBG), in collaboration with the Africa Federation Tabligh Board (AFTAB) and the Madrasah Centre of Excellence (MCE), held a transformative Neuropsychology of Learning (NPL) program in Mauritius. Designed to elevate educational practices within Madrasahs, the program welcomed educators eager to delve into innovative strategies for nurturing a vibrant and responsive classroom environment. Under the guidance of facilitators Sr. Shama Dewji and Sr. Neelam Jiwa, participants explored the science of learning, acquiring tools to foster deeper student engagement and adaptability in teaching.

The program aimed to reshape classroom experiences by focusing on the “how” of learning. Educators dove into understanding the mindsets, learning capacities, and energies that their students bring to class. Through hands-on exercises, teachers assessed their personal teaching styles, exploring how to recognize and adapt to the varied needs of their students. This approach equips teachers to foster a positive learning environment by understanding and leveraging each student’s unique characteristics.

Throughout the sessions, educators engaged in real-life scenarios and collaborative discussions to translate neuropsychological insights into practical, effective teaching strategies. By examining cognitive energies and personality-driven learning styles, they acquired tools to make lessons more accessible and appealing to students of diverse temperaments. This initiative has left teachers feeling empowered and equipped to address student needs with greater empathy and creativity.

Another distinctive feature of the NPL program was its focus on building an adaptable teaching framework within Madrasah classrooms. By adopting neuropsychological techniques, teachers can craft lessons that not only promote retention and active participation but also develop critical thinking skills, enriching the overall educational journey. The program’s success lies in its holistic approach, which balances intellectual growth with spiritual learning, key to Madrasah education.

Integrating neuropsychological techniques in Madrasah education offers a transformative impact on both teaching and learning. These methods help unlock students' learning potential by enhancing retention and fostering active, engaged participation. By creating an environment that responds to each student’s unique pace and needs, these approaches also strengthen the bond between educators and students, supporting growth in a way that’s aligned with individual development.

Such methodologies equip teachers to customize their teaching for varied content and diverse student profiles, fostering a truly individualized approach. Rather than categorizing students by perceived abilities, this approach encourages a deeper understanding of each child’s distinct personality and strengths. By recognizing and nurturing these unique qualities, educators can harness individual talents and foster a learning experience that supports well-rounded development for every student.

The AFED Capacity Building Group (CBG) wish to accord sincere gratitude to the Office Bearers of Africa Federation for their unwavering support and Mauritius Jamaat for supporting and hosting the program.

Our sincere appreciation also goes to the Madrasah Centre of Excellence and Africa Federation Tabligh Board (AFTAB) for their collaboration in the NPL Program.

We would also like to thank the Africa Federation Secretariat for their encouragement, cooperation, and financial support, which has made it possible for us to consistently hold such training seminars.

Finally, our deep appreciation also goes to every participant who took time off from their busy schedules for this transformative experience that fuels personal growth, enhances leadership abilities, and positively impacts lives and society.
