Virtual Mentorship Program for AFTab Pre-University Camp Facilitators

The Africa Federation Capacity Building Group (CBG) held a Mentorship Training on the 24th and 25th of July 2024. The session was held virtually for the mentors who were going to be a part of the Pre-University Camp organized by AFED Tabligh Board (AFTab) from 3rd to 11th August 2024 at Sea Scape Hotel, Dar es Salaam.

Given the geographical dispersion of the mentors, CBG adapted the Mentorship Development Program (MDP) into a virtual format, held over two days, with each session lasting 1.5 hours. This adjustment ensured that all mentors could engage in the training without the need for travel. The training facilitated by Br. Shabbirhussein Khalfan, Sr. Neelam Jiwa and Br. Mohamedabbas Karim focused on the Egan’s Skilled Helper Model - a well-respected and renowned framework for effective mentoring and counselling.

Despite the shortened schedule, the training included practical exercises that enabled mentors to apply the concepts of Egan’s Model. These exercises enhanced their understanding and retention of the material, ensuring they were well-prepared to support the pre-university students. Additionally, mentors have been encouraged to continue practicing these skills with each other to further solidify their mastery of the model.

Initial feedback from the mentors has been positive. They appreciated the practical, hands-on approach and felt confident in their ability to apply the key concepts of the model which guided them to provide robust support during the upcoming camp. However, some have indicated a preference for in-person training in the future, citing the value of more direct interaction.

The AFED Capacity Building Group (CBG) wish to accord their appreciation to AFED Tabligh Board (AFTab) for initiating the session for the Pre-University Mentors. We would also like to appreciate the mentors who took time off from their busy schedules to enhance their skills so as to play a significant role in fostering a positive and nurturing environment for our mentees.

PARTICIPANT TESTIMONIAL:

  • I truly appreciated the opportunity to learn from the experiences shared by other participants, as this fostered a collaborative atmosphere.

  • If feasible, incorporating in-person training sessions could greatly enhance engagement and provide a more interactive learning environment.

  • The role-play activity was a helpful addition!

  • I would like to sincerely thank the Pre-University team and the CBG team for their dedication in facilitating these sessions, despite the challenges. Your efforts are truly appreciated!
