PARENTAL INFLUENCE ON CAREER CHOICES
On Sunday, 3rd February 2013, the Education Board in collaboration with the Dar es Salaam KSIJ Youth Affairs team held its first career related event for the year. The seminar titled “Parental Influence on Career Choices” was held at the Bab ul Ilm Auditorium in the Tabligh Building – Dar es Salaam.
The speaker for the program was Ms. Zeenat Thawer, a trained Guidance Counselor (NCDA Accredited) with over 15 years of experience in career planning and mentoring parents. The seminar was aimed to bridge the gap between youngsters and their parents on career decision-making. It was designed to help parents engage and motivate their teen, identify their passions, hidden talents and personality type.
The following aspects were elaborated by the speaker:
- Parental role in Career Development
- The benefits of early planning
- How to be an active listener for your child
- Identifying your child’s skills, talents and interests
- Developing a realistic action plan
- What is a Career Assessment and why you should get one done for your child
The whole session was conducted in a most conducive atmosphere for the parents to open up and discuss about the challenges they were facing with regards to career decision making by the children, this followed by a question and answer session towards the end.
Parents also filled in the evaluation form providing their comments and feedback on the program. Parents in an open session stated that the event was very much appreciated and requested for such sessions to be held more often in the future. A total of 26 parents attended the program.
