GO DOWN A DIFFERENT PATH
Exploring Unique Jobs in Health Sciences
A small group of new professionals who have just stepped into the era of their respective professions, envisioned to have a program in which they could motivate and inspire the younger generation of students and their parents to think in a different light while choosing their prospective future careers. These professionals themselves being in non-traditional health science fields chose to name the theme ‘Go down a Different Path’.
Under the banner of the Africa Federation Education Board, in coordination with the KSI Jamaat Central Board of Education and with the support from Al Muntazir Islamic Seminary, this event was organized on 21st July 2013 spearheaded by the organizing chairperson Br. Mohamed Zahir Alimohamed and moderated by Prof. Karim Manji at the Al Muntazir Islamic Seminary – Girls Hall in Dar es Salaam.
The program was hosted by Br. Aliasgher Janmohamed keeping the participants entertained and focused throughout the program. The program began at 2 p.m. with recitation of verses from the Holy Qur’an by Br. Hussein Alimohamed, followed by a welcome address from Br Mohamed Zahir Alimohamed, who; summarized that often when career programs like the traditional careers and their monetary benefits are dealt with, they overshadow the other lucrative careers out there. He went on to explain that the very purpose of this event was to bring to the lime light such overshadowed careers.
The careers speakers were: Speech Therapy by Sr. Nazneen Gangji-Sumar, Biotechnology by Br. Mohamed Zahir Alimohamed, Medical Imaging Technology by Sr. Sajida Alloo, Doctorate of Pharmacy by Br. Zainabbas Ladha, Nursing by Sr. Zainab Karim & Sr. Tabassum Fazal, and Physiotherapy by Sr. Maryam Sheriff-Bhanji.
The speakers explained to about 120 participants who were present what their career is, what are the paths one can choose to enter into such career, what exactly one does as a professional as well as their personal experiences in the field. Prof Karim Manji summarized each presentation and shed some light on other aspects of the profession, he moderated two question and answer sessions in which the participants asked several questions. Sheikh Murtadha Alidina who graced the event as the Chief Guest also gave his views on the religious aspects and the shariah point of view of these various professions.
The program ended at 6.30 p.m., with namaz led by Sheikh Murtadha Alidina followed by Iftar during which the participants had a chance to interact with the speakers, get more information and clear their doubts. Indeed it was an evening when brains got to work and light was shed on some of the fascinating and interesting non-traditional science fields existing out there.
