THE ROLE OF YOUTH IN TODAYS WORLD
Youths are a vital pillar in any society; hence it is the responsibility of every society to nurture and invest in them for they are the future generation of the society we live in.
With this in mind, Muslim youths from diverse backgrounds and localities within and around Mombasa County were given a common platform to discuss the fundamental roles that youth can play in this dynamic world at a seminar organized at Kenya Muslim Women Hall, Mombasa on Saturday, 19th October 2013.
Bilal Muslim Mission of Kenya was instrumental in providing the necessary support in the organization of the event.
The forum was opened with the recitation from the Holy Qur’an. The three hours program began with an interactive session in which the youth were able to speak out their minds on challenges they encounter in their day to day lives as a ground setting for the seminar. This was followed by seeking solutions to these challenges encountered.
An observation made during the session found out that the youth engaged in a series of discussions, giving various suggestions and opinions which resulted in a fruitful brainstorming exercise.
Sheikh Faisal Muhammad from Malindi, spoke about the challenges faced by youth in modern times and connected it to the people of Kahf as described in the Holy Quran in Surah al Kahf.
He focused on four lessons from Surah al Kahf which are based on the importance of the youth and the society at large namely:
- Belief in Oneness of Allah (s.w.t)
- Wealth, signifying the importance of paying alms and taking care of the poor and the needy.
- The importance of knowledge and its role in solving societal problems.
- The issue of leadership and its role.
The youths then had an opportunity to ask questions which were responded to by Sheikh Faisal.
Participants commended the organizers of this function and requested for similar forums to be organized regularly.
“The speech has been wonderful because it has addressed the challenges faced by the youth. It is my opinion that this kind of programs need to go on.” Aziz Alfan – Resident, Mombasa County
“This is a very informative session and I hope in the future we will be able to encourage young people to participate more, to discuss on these issues even on the grass root level.” Halima Mohamed – Coast Education Centre, Mombasa
