Golden Crescent Group – GCG – as it was popularly known – was started in early 1970’s by some youths of our Community. The Group was initially quite active but gradually lost steam with members losing interest and ultimately shutting down in around 1980’s.
The purpose of GCG was to empower the youths and create leadership opportunities, a noble vision. The Group had done several humanitarian assistance projects like digging of water wells in areas where clean water was scarce and also free eye camps in the rural areas of Tanzania and Kenya. Regular seminars were held for youths on empowerment and leadership ethics. The first elected Governor was Brother Amirali Karim of Mombasa, Kenya.
Comments by the Archives Secretariat:
It is very sad to see that some of the Youth Organizations in our community are slowly losing their vigour and enthusiasm. The dynamism and interest that was there in the 1970’s and 1980’s is diminishing and a state of lethargy is creeping in amongst our youth in particular, more so with the emerging influence of social media and its impact, families too are not anymore immune to this.
We request all our readers to remember past leaders, volunteers and social workers of our community who devoted and sacrificed their valuable time and resources for the wider interest of the community and for the underprivileged. May Allah (SWT) grant them maghferat and place their souls amongst His chosen ones – Ameen. Please remember them with Sura-e-Fateha.
