The event of Karbala has so many different dimensions to it. It is a narrative of revolution, freedom, reform, remembrance of Allah, steadfastness in faith in the wake of calamities, sacrifice of everything for the sake of Allah. The aims and goals of this great sacrifice cannot be small and must have been significant enough that such a big sacrifice was made for them. What are those goals? What is the ultimate purpose of Karbala? And most importantly which moral lessons have this got for Muslim youths in a changing society like ours today?
Understanding these questions will help us in directing our efforts towards what Imam Husain (AS) sought to propagate and protect.
The Capacity building group organized an online workshop with Dr. Mahmood Mawjee who is a gifted international speaker and coach on Sunday, 16th August 2020. The 2 ½ hour session co-moderated by Sr. Zainab Jagani and Mohamedabbas Karim was literally a turning point for some of the 38 participants addressed by Br. Mahmood.
His inspiring and passionate focus on evolving the mindset of youths about the event of Kerbala not just as a history on the struggle of Imam Hussein (AS) but to look at Kerbala as a place of learning; an example to emulate everywhere and at all time. He further connected the attributes displayed by the Youths in Kerbala such as patience, steadfastness, perseverance, visionary, goal – orientation and how youths can co – relate those to their daily lives in their current environment be it in college, university or work. Br. Mahmood empowered the youths on self-improvement techniques to be able to introduce and sustain reformation within their life styles. For a follow-up session, participants were to pick one attribute to work upon as an action plan.
Feedback from Participants:
- Every now and then, life will throw you a curveball when you least expect it. The Almighty sends them to disrupt your daily, comfortable routine. They’re a blessing in disguise. You’ll eventually realize. He’s watching to see if you’ve got what it takes to pull through!
