Circular No.: JMT/041/23 Date: February 10, 2023

Powerful earthquakes that shook Turkey and Syria on Monday 6th February have resulted in more than 20,000 deaths. Scores of violent aftershocks followed both the quakes resulted in widespread damage and collapse of major buildings. The death toll is expected to rise as the search and rescue for survivors continues in both countries.
The situation is particularly dire in Syria, the country already suffering from 13 years of war, is also facing the added hardship of harsh winter weather conditions. Hundreds of thousands of people have been left homeless in the middle of winter. Many have camped out in makeshift shelters in supermarket car parks, mosques, roadsides or amid the ruins, often desperate for food, medicine, water and heat.
