In the tapestry of time, a luminous thread of leadership and dedication is woven through the life of Marhum Alhaj Ebrahim Hussein Shariff Dewji. Born on April 10, 1923, in Zanzibar, his journey mirrors the rich history of the Khoja Shia Ithna Asheri Community in Africa, resonating with the wisdom encapsulated in the words of Imam Ali Ibn Abi Talib (AS.): “Live amongst people in such a manner that if you die, they weep over you and if you are alive, they crave for your company.”
Sixty years have passed since Marhum Ebrahimbhai left this world on January 9, 1964, while occupying the esteemed position of Chairmanship of AFED. A great leader, he is remembered for his farsighted vision, wisdom and intellect, embodying the essence of a selfless, devoted and sincere social worker dedicated to the community’s welfare.
Tracing his lineage to the pioneer Haji Dewji Jamal, who played a pivotal role in establishing the Khoja Shia Ithna-Asheri Community in Zanzibar in 1881, Ebrahimbhai’s impact on the community’s history was profound, despite the brevity of his life. His slogan “Ek Bano, Nek Bano” echoed his commitment to unity and community welfare.
Assuming the leadership of AFED in 1958, Ebrahimbhai embarked on a journey across continents, leaving an indelible impression with his logical and unique problem-solving approach. His tenure as Chairman of Africa Federation witnessed significant milestones, including obtaining an Ijaza from Marja e Taqleed Ayatollah Seyyed Muhsin al Hakim, a move that led to the centralization and disbursement of hukuk funds, showcasing his strategic foresight.
Ebrahimbhai’s dedication extended beyond borders, reaching Madagascar, Mauritius, Somalia, and more. The formation of the Madagascar Territorial Council in 1961 symbolized his unwavering commitment to unity, leading to Madagascar officially joining AFED in 1962. His success in uniting the Khoja Shia Ithna-Asheri Jamaats of Madagascar showcased a substantial commitment to community cohesion.
In his short life, Ebrahimbhai exemplified exemplary leadership, leaving an enduring impact that few are privileged to achieve. As we commemorate the 60th anniversary of his passing, let us remember not just a leader but a visionary whose legacy echoes through the fabric of our community.
January 3rd, also marks the death anniversary of Marhum Alhaj Mohamedbhai Dhirani, past Chairman of AFED, who passed away in 2021.
May Allah (SWT), in His infinite mercy, grant them an exalted status in the vicinity of the Fourteen Masoomeen (A.S.). Let us recite Sura-e-Fateha for Marhum Ebrahimbhai Shariff Dewji, Marhum Mohamedbhai Dhirani, all our past leaders who have left this transient world and all Marhumeen.
