In the annals of selfless service and unwavering dedication to the community, the name Maalim Ahmed Issa Hasham shines brightly, a testament to a life rich with purpose and compassion. Maalim Ahmed Issa Hasham, famously known as Maalim Issa, has made remarkable contributions that have left an indelible mark on the lives of countless people. As we reflect on his legacy, we uncover a tapestry of roles that continue to inspire and uplift those who had the privilege of knowing him. His journey was rich in multifaceted service, spanning religious leadership, guidance and a steadfast commitment to the well-being of his community.
Born in Zanzibar on the 30th of August, 1929, to Essa bhai Hasham and Zainab bai Hasham, he was one of ten siblings, growing up alongside Mohammad Ali, Pyarali, Roshanali, Kassamali, Aunali, Kulsum, Shireen, Khairoon, Leila, and Fatma. His academic journey blossomed at School Faiz, where he thrived, setting the stage for a lifetime of learning and teaching, mainly Islamic religious subjects.
Professionally, he served as an Accountant with Kearsley Travel and Tours, but his true calling lay in his service to his community. He married Nargis bai Nathoo, and they were blessed with a daughter, Tahera. His devotion to his family was unwavering, and it was this same dedication that he extended to the wider community.
Maalim Issa’s life was profoundly multifaceted, and his impact on the community extended far beyond the boundaries of conventional roles.
One could recall Maalim who earnestly recited the nikah, bringing couples together in holy matrimony. His presence in these joyous occasions was a source of blessing and guidance, creating lasting memories for newlyweds and their families.
He also assumed the role of leading namaaz-e-mayyit where his comforting presence provided solace to the bereaved as they bid their final farewells to their loved ones.
In moments of uncertainty and indecision, Maalim Issa was the reassuring figure who offered Istikhara, providing guidance and counsel with a depth of wisdom. Conflict, whether within families or businesses, found resolution in his presence. He acted as a mediator and arbitrator, applying wisdom and fairness to reconcile disputes and mend fractured relationships, preserving harmony within the community.
The complexities of fiqh problems held no secrets for Maalim Issa. He was the source of solutions to intricate matters of Islamic jurisprudence, offering clarity and guidance to those who sought his knowledge.
In the 1970s, he served as a Fiqh and Arabic teacher at Husseini Society (now Husayni Madressa) in Dar es Salaam. He also contributed to preparing the syllabus for senior classes at the Madressa.
His commitment to spiritual education extended to teaching Hajj masaels, imparting knowledge that enriched the community’s understanding of this profound pilgrimage, and fostering a deeper connection with their faith. Furthermore, he regularly joined the Hajj Caravan Group during Hajj, where his presence provided unwavering support and guidance to fellow pilgrims on their sacred journeys.
The foundations of education were not limited to the spiritual realm. Maalim Issa’s selfless contributions to School Faiz in Zanzibar played a pivotal role in shaping the education of generations, nurturing young minds to become well-rounded individuals, who also became successful School Faiz (Madressah) teachers.

During times of need, Maalim Issa was a constant source of support, extending a compassionate hand to provide welfare assistance in various forms, whether for education, marriage, rent, or daily essentials. His generosity and benevolence knew no bounds. Several people would entrust him with funds to distribute to the needy families.
As one of the founders of WIPAHS, almost every Sunday, he would visit Kibaha, showcasing his commitment to the cause. From its early stages, Maalim played a pivotal role in providing WIPAHS with unwavering moral support and guidance.
Maalim Issa had a keen interest in the projects, always seeking to understand the details and subsequently sharing his ideas and wisdom. Like a caring father, he would, at times, express his concern to ensure tasks were carried out with accountability.
His final message came through a ten-minute phone call on Friday, 1st February 2008. During this call to Mrs. Haji Saheb, a member of WIPAHS involved in organizing programs for Imam Hussein (AS) and Sayyeda Janabe Zainab (AS) day on Saturday and Sunday, 2nd/3rd February 2008, he expressed deep appreciation for the dedication of the ladies. He strongly stressed the importance of continuing the noble work of spreading the true message of Karbala, emphasizing that it should persist at all costs.
The multifaceted roles of Maalim Issa Hasham stand as a testament to his unwavering dedication and selflessness, leaving an enduring mark of compassion, wisdom, and service that consistently inspires and uplifts the community.
On the 2nd of February, 2008, Maalim Issa Hasham departed for his heavenly abode, leaving behind a remarkable history of service. The affectionate Maalim Issa, provided support with humility that should serve as a model for the entire community. His contributions remain cherished, and his unwavering dedication is a source of perpetual inspiration.
May Allah (SWT) grant Maalim Issa a high station in the proximity of Ahlulbayt (AS), where he is enveloped in Allah’s (SWT) bountiful mercy and grace. Let us remember him and all other Marhumeen with Sura-e-Fateha.
