Bilal Muslim Mission of Kenya’s Economic Upliftment Department initiated The Livegoat Program in 2009. Its purpose is to provide goats to targeted individuals at the Bilal centres for goat farming. These include widows, orphans and other deserving people.
Goats are relatively low maintenance animals with short reproduction cycles, providing a means for farmers to lessen the impact of poverty. They are well-adapted to arid landscapes and can thrive in variable temperatures during food and water shortages. Goat milk can provide most of the essential nutrients and energy required by growing children.
In December 2023, plans were in progress to initiate a new run of the program and thereafter the program has facilitated the provision of 440 goats at Bilal centres in January and February 2024. 110 beneficiaries received I male goat and 3 female goats. Recipients are responsible for ‘giving back’ and will be providing 1 male goat and 1 female goat to the mission in the near future so that other individuals may also benefit from this revolving scheme continues.

Healthy goats
To ensure healthy goats were provided to the beneficiaries and to enhance the probability of a successful run of the program, Dr Kevin Makumba, a qualified veterinarian, was tasked with ensuring all the goats were vaccinated against lung infections and severe dermatitis. Deworming medication was also given to the goats.
Training and monitoring
Dr Makumba met with the beneficiaries at each centre to provide training on rearing and breeding goats. This included:
- Providing suitable housing /shelter.
- Hygiene – specifically the Dipping Method.
- Goat health – this included information on how to deworm the goats and advice on when individuals can treat their goats themselves versus when they need professional intervention.
- Sustainable breeding.
Committees were set-up to monitor the program and report back to Bilal Kenya via monthly progress reports.
