The Africa Federation’s Capacity Building Board (CBG) recently conducted the Neuro-Psychology of Learning (NPL) program. This collaborative initiative, in partnership with the Africa Federation Tabligh Board (AFTAB) and the Madrasah Centre of Excellence (MCE), unfolded its insights in Antananarivo, Madagascar, on 1st March and 2nd March 2024.
A group of 25 eager Madrasah teachers actively took part in this knowledge sharing journey led by facilitators Br. Shabbirhussein Khalfan and Sr. Tahera Shivji. The program aimed to equip teachers with the practical application of neuropsychological principles for a more effective learning environment in Madrasahs.

The main aim of the Neuropsychology of Learning program was to ensure that, upon its conclusion, participants had engaged in a comprehensive self-assessment, exploring key psychological frameworks integral to the learning process. The program involved a detailed review of learning needs, energies, and thinking approaches tailored to the diverse student population. Additionally, participants delved into identifying their inherent strengths and challenges as teachers, considering individual needs, energy levels, and thinking approaches.
Practical guidance on adapting teaching styles for enhanced effectiveness was provided, and the program concluded with the establishment of action plans. These action plans were designed to empower participants to apply the acquired skills and techniques in their everyday teaching scenarios, fostering a more dynamic and responsive educational approach.

The application of Neuropsychological approaches in Madrassah learning offers multiple advantages. It enhances students’ learning capabilities, leading to improved retention. The approach fosters more effective learning activities, promoting increased engagement and participation. Additionally, it establishes a reciprocal learning relationship between teachers and students, aligning with individual stages of growth. Teachers are empowered to tailor processes to diverse content and student needs, fostering a child-specific educational approach. Moreover, it discourages labeling of learners by encouraging a deeper understanding of each student’s personality, enabling teachers to utilize differences constructively and capitalize on individual talents for holistic development.
The workshop, spanning two days, focused on various key elements, including:
- Understanding temperaments, interaction styles, and cognitive processes through self-assessment.
- Exploring strengths and challenges for both teachers and students across the four temperaments.
- Evaluating strengths and challenges associated with various interaction styles.
- Enhancing communication skills by adapting to different interaction styles.
- Improving teaching effectiveness through personal assessment, identifying learning approaches for each temperament, and implementing action plans for effective teaching.
The closing and certification ceremony was held on Sunday 3rd March 2024.
