The Africa Federation Golf Competition dubbed the ‘Tuwasiliane Festival’ was hosted by the KSI Jamaat of Moshi and Arusha on 2nd and 3rd February 2013. This was the first Festival in which a competition of AFED was played on two venues, which was an exciting challenge for the organizers, and a wonderful retreat for the Golfers.
The Festival provided a platform for interactive communications and exchanges between the 41 Golfers who took to the golf courses of Moshi (TPC) and Arusha (Arusha Gymkhana Club). Old golfers met with their counterparts from East Africa, junior golfers met for the first time, while the not so old, not so young golfers met with hugs, all preparing for some good golf on the two courses.
At the opening night on 1st Feb 2013, the Convener of the Festival, Alhaj Salim Khaki welcomed all to Moshi and Arusha. This was followed by a welcome by Murabbi Ahmed bhai Daya, Chairman of Moshi Jamaat who apart from welcoming all on behalf of Moshi and Arusha, read out a brief message from the Africa Federation Chairman, Alhaj Anwer bhai Dharamsi, who could not make it due an urgent trip to India.
Participants and their categories were:
Day one in Moshi, saw some smiles, some snorts as all the players went round the course trying to finish the round in the least amount of shots, thus earning maximum stableford points. At the end of it all, Kaunain Assaria of Nairobi and Salim Khaki of Moshi led in the 13 – 24 handicap pack with 38 points each, followed very closely by Azim bhai Dewji on 37 points. Kauser Jeraj led in the lower handicap category (0-12), with 35 points, followed by Mahmood Somji (33 points) and Muzaffar Yusufali (31 points), both from Arusha. Seniors group leader was Mustafa Dhanji (32 points), and the juniors pack leader was Irfan Nanji with 28 points.
Day two in Arusha: The players teed off according to their performances in Moshi the day before, with the leaders starting off last. Arusha Golf was a treat for all, as the course was in excellent condition, all due to untiring efforts by Murabbi Habib Yusufali and his green keeper group of Arusha Gymkhana Club. The presentation ceremony was graced by the presence of Alhaj Mohamed Hemani, Hon Treasurer of Africa Federation. In his speech at the ceremony, he assured AFED’s support for all sporting events, as this ensures a healthy community. Alhaj Gulamhussein Mukhtar, President of Arusha Jamaat, too assured his support and finally Alhaj Mahmood Somji, Chairman of AFED Sports Council thanked all who in one way or another made the Festival, one to remember. Trophies and golf equipment were presented to the winners and runner positions (mentioned above), which marked the closing of the Tuwasiliane Golf Festival – 2013.
